The California Senate approved a bill last night that could lead to the construction of a controversial peripheral canal around the fragile Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. According to the Chron, the senate approved a bill that would create a new state panel with the powers to build the large canal. The canal proposal has engendered a backlash from some environmentalists who argue that the canal would decimate the already collapsing delta fisheries because it would divert fresh river water from it.
