In case you missed it, the Contra Costa Times and the Oakland Tribune ran a great package of stories on Sunday about ethically questionable decisions made over the years by Peralta Community College Chancellor Elihu Harris. The main story focuses on a $940,000 no bid contract that Harris steered to one of his business partners without disclosing his ties to the contractor. Great reporting and great details by journalists Matt Krupnick and Thomas Peele. One of our favorite nuggets: Harris, the former two-term Oakland mayor, owns a Berkeley funeral home that doesn’t pay its bills. Plus, Harris doesn’t disclose the business on his statements of economic interests as required by law.
