Zion-I

When: Fri., Sept. 16, 9 p.m. 2011

Five years ago, Zion-I headlined a hip-hop show at The Fillmore that seemed completely unorthodox, almost to the point of being transgressive. Half backpacker and half turf, it featured commercially-driven artists like The Team and Mistah FAB alongside rappers more familiar to college students (Zion-I would probably fall in that camp). At that time, the delineations between those two scenes were more fixed, and the fact that the show sold out left a lot of people dumbfounded. Since then, Zion-I has tried the same gimmick year after year, and it never seems to get old. This year's iteration features The Jacka and Husuleh of Mob Figaz, bilingual group Los Rakas, the Honor Roll crew (whose most famous member is rapper-producer Trackademicks), and KMEL DJ Amen. Goons, nerds, hippies, and geeks should all be adequately represented; if nothing else, the show is worth checking out for curiosity's sake. At The Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco) on Friday, Sept. 16. 9 p.m., $25. LiveNation.com
