Zigaboo's Birthday Bash

When: Sat., Dec. 27, 9 p.m. 2008

Oakland funk drummer Zigaboo Modeliste keeps a low profile, even though he's arguably one of the best percussionists in the Bay Area -- possibly the world. An original member of the 1970s New Orleans band the Meters, Zigaboo (or "Ziggy" as he's affectionately called) has a signature second-line style that's been sampled by scads of hip-hop artists (including N.W.A., Black Eyed Peas, and A Tribe Called Quest). His rhythms are clean, syncopated, and aggressive; he's adept at creating a bedrock groove and adding adornments to even the simplest pop music. Ziggy was credited for the propulsive drum fills that made Amerie's "1 Thing" one of the catchiest pop songs of 2005, and he's amassed a huge song catalog over his four-decade-long career. The drummer celebrates his birthday on Saturday, Dec. 27 at San Francisco's Cafe du Nord (2170 Market St.). 9 p.m., $20. CafeduNord.com
