Youth Movement Records Open House

When: Mon., June 22, 2 p.m. 2009

Oakland certainly doesn't suffer for lack of rappers, hip-hop producers, or fledgling moguls. Many of them are quite enterprising and some have managed to go it alone, while others rely on music education programs to help set their careers in motion. That's where organizations like Youth Movement Records come into play. Six years old and staffed mostly by teenagers (with a couple adults standing by), Youth Movement Records uses the business model of a record label to teach teens about artistry, entrepreneurship, and the perils of navigating through a cutthroat industry. It uses hip-hop as a hook, with the hope that participants will garner job skills that apply to other industries. Monday, June 22's open house at the Fox Theater (530 18th St., Oakland) is open to all youth ages thirteen to nineteen. 2 p.m., free. YouthMovementRecords.org
