There’s a reason Young M.A made it onto Forbes’ 30 under 30 music list this year — and it started with 16 bars. Brooklyn native Katorah Kasanova Marrero got her break in 2016 when she dropped “Ooouuu,” her debut single that went triple platinum and landed her a spot on the Billboard Top 10. In “PettyWap,” a track that came out in June, Marrero starts off with a bittersweet message to an ex-lover but reveals a sorry-not-sorry attitude that boomerangs back to her “me always” motto, which is what the “M.A” in Young M.A stands for. Marrero rapped, She just got a hundred missed calls, it’s her man damn / Oh that’s your n— now, huh? / Said you wasn’t with him, now you with him now, huh? Aside from working on her next album, Herstory in the Making, Marrero and her mom founded Kweens Foundation, which serves as a resource for single mothers, especially those who have lost children to street violence.
