Yob

When: Sat., Aug. 6, 7:30 p.m. 2011

It's a good thing YOB didn't make good on its word. Five years ago the Portland doom trio announced it was breaking up. And yet, three years later, it put out one of the heaviest releases of 2009, The Great Cessation, on the Profound Lore label, which opens with twelve-plus minutes of crushing, mammoth-size riffs ("Burning the Altar"). YOB is soon to release a follow-up, Atma, which features a major endorsement in the form of guest Scott Kelly of Neurosis. Bay Area metal heads fucking love YOB, so thankfully the band is playing two local shows this weekend: on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 924 Gilman (924 Gilman St., Berkeley; 7:30 p.m., $10), with labelmates Dark Castle, local black metal band Dispirit, and SF experimental/atmospheric outfit Worm Ouroboros, which features ex-Ludicra (and current Agalloch) drummer Aesop Dekker. The next day, YOB, plays a matinee show with Dark Castle and locals Hornss at the Elbo Room (647 Valencia St., San Francisco; 3 p.m. $10, $12). Don't miss it. Elbo.com.
