Xiang Yuan Xiao Long Bao specializes in soup dumplings (xiao long bao), and as soon as you step into the restaurant, you can see the chefs behind a glass wall showing off their xiao long bao folding skills. The pork-filled xiao long bao here are above average, with a skin that’s not too thick and plenty of hot, flavorful broth inside. Be sure to bite off the top first to let the soup cool, and eat them with the provided vinegar and ginger dipping sauce. But don’t miss the pan-fried pork buns (sheng jian bao), which are porky, slightly soupy dumplings with a pillowy top and crisp fried bottom, topped with black sesame seeds and green onions. The appetizers are worth trying, too, like cold chicken in wine sauce and the cold cucumbers with garlic. For entreés, try the meatballs in brown sauce, which are light, flavorful, and gigantic, or try the rice cakes with pork and tangy pickled vegetables.
