All Ages, Blues, Folk, & Country, Rock & Pop

When: Wed., Dec. 30, 9 p.m. and Thu., Dec. 31, 9 p.m. 2009

Want to pay tribute to punk days gone by? Seminal Seventies/Eighties LA punk pioneers X will be happy to refresh your memory. Officially together again despite several breaks and multiple ongoing side projects, John Doe and Exene Cervenka say they've been writing new material, a promising sign for the future. In a punk landscape turned bland, poppy, and tediously radio-friendly, X is one of the few reminders that punk used to be snarly and relevant. With a distinctive sound that includes elements of punk, rockabilly, roots, and straight-up rock, the band has always been known for its high-energy shows. Although Exene's revelation that she's suffering from multiple sclerosis lends an air of how-long-can-they-last sadness to any X show, she's clearly not going down without a fight. Would you expect anything else from the band that wrote "Devil Doll"? On Wednesday, Dec. 30, and Thursday, Dec. 31, at Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $31 (Wed.), $50 (NYE), $71 for a two-day pass.
