Wuthering Heights

Rated NR 128 minutes 2011

Leave it to director Andrea Arnold to reinvent Emily Brontë’s English-lit perennial in a resoundingly 21st-century way. The tragic story of star-crossed lovers Heathcliff and Cathy, tussling on the bleak Yorkshire moors, bursts from the screen with maximum urgency and dark, sordid detail in Arnold’s screenplay, written with Olivia Hetreed. This different breed of Heathcliff (played by actors Paul Hilton and James Howson at different ages) is a newly freed black African ex-slave raging against the blunt cruelty and unexpected kindness of Cathy (Shannon Beer and Kaya Scodelario) and her kin while director Arnold (Fish Tank) drags us bodily through the soggy, mean Northern English landscape. Arnold’s dank, impetuous, stormy version of Brontë’s novel is a rough masterpiece – although not for everyone. You’ve got to earn it.
