Bay Area Book Festival is a literature nerd’s paradise, complete with author panels, an outdoor fair, writing contests, and a mini film festival. From Pulitzer Prize-winner Viet Thanh Nguyen to feminist writer and activist Rebecca Solnit, this year’s lineup is stacked. One event to look out for is Ngu~gi~ wa Thiong’o’s conversation with UC Berkeley professor Namwali Serpell on his memoir that was recently released in the U.S., Wrestling with the Devil. In the book, Ngu~gi~ details his experience being taken prisoner by the Kenyan government. For almost a year, he was held captive due to his artistic opposition to the regime — and somehow, under 24-hour surveillance, he managed to write an entire novel on toilet paper. Wrestling with the Devil captures the pain of his captivity but also the unshakeable spirit of defiance that helped him retain hope against all odds.
