Woody Guthrie's American Song

When: July 10-15, 8 p.m. and July 17-21, 8 p.m. 2012

Forty-five years after his death, folk singer and songwriter Woody Guthrie remains a celebrated folk hero and a durable presence in American pop culture. Now, on the week of his centennial -- Guthrie's actual birthday is July 14, though many acolytes consider it a month-long affair -- every media vessel from Huffington Post to NPR's Fresh Air has produced its own reverent encomium. And local folk musicians are also doing their best to give the great man his due. This week, a cast of actors and musicians will perform at Freight & Salvage (2020 Addison St., Berkeley) to commemorate Guthrie's Dust Bowl melodies and plainspoken wisdom. Under sure-handed direction of Peter Glazer and musical director Jeff Waxman, they've developed a fully-staged musical to tell Guthrie's story, plumped with classic songs like "Jolly Banker," Bound for Glory," and, of course, "This Land Is Your Land." The cast includes Sam Misner, Megan Smith, Tony Marcus, Harry Yaglijian, Chuck Ervin, Robin Flower, Berwick Haynes, Matt Mueller, and Lisa Asher. July 11 through 22. 8 p.m., $22.50, $24.50.
