Wonder in Aliceland

When: Fri., March 5, 11:30 a.m.-9:45 p.m. 2010

It's not every Thursday night you get to go down the rabbit hole. This week, the Grand Lake Theater (3200 Grand Ave., Oakland) opens the 3-D version of Tim Burton's exciting, psychedelic spin on the Lewis Carroll classic, Alice in Wonderland, with Johnny Depp starring as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as a ferocious Red Queen. In this particularly creepy version, Alice returns to Wonderland as a nineteen-year-old adolescent and ensconces herself in Carroll's world of hectoring rabbits, mad tea parties, bitchy female despots, and Cheshire cat heads bobbing from the sky. Burton's version is an amazing feat of magical realism and new animation technologies. Kingman's Lucky Lounge (3332 Grand Ave., Oakland) will host an extended happy hour for anyone attending the opening night screening at midnight on Thursday, Mar. 4. $6.50-$9.50.
