William Fitzsimmons

When: Thu., July 23, 8 p.m. 2009

Jenny Owen Youngs has a girlish quality to her vocals that would lead you to expect some kind of oh-too-sensitive folksinger, but her sweet vocals are put at the service of songs full of dark, shocking images. The songs are achingly vulnerable and have bittersweet insights into the hazards of lasting, and fleeting, relationships. On Transmitter Failure, her most recent album, she often forsakes her acoustic guitar for synthesizers and a rock band to beef up her tales of heartache and lost love. Youngs will open for William Fitzsimmons, another quirky folksinger with a skewed world view, at the Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco) on Thursday, July 23. 8 p.m., $15.
