.Will Oakland Council Put Cop Tax on the Ballot?

That’s what we’ll learn tomorrow, when the City Council meets to discuss whether to ask voters to decide on a new property tax to finance the hiring of more cops. According to the Trib, the measure would charge homeowners $113 for the first fiscal year, rising to $276 eventually. In return, Oakland would get another 105 cops and 75 police technicians. Council President Ignacio De la Fuente won’t support the measure, arguing that the events of the last few weeks demonstrate that the City Hall has plenty of wasted money, and the council should try to cut the fat first.
