Ever since its 2011 self-recorded debut Pillowtalk, Austin indie outfit Wild Child has steadily gained national attention for its energetic take on folky pop. International tours, major television appearances, and record label negotiations soon followed. For the seven-piece’s fourth full-length album, the band worked with a slew of notable producers, including Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie), Scott McMicken (Dr. Dog), and Chris Boosahda (Shakey Graves). This year, Expectations arrived, full of Kelsey Wilson’s soulful vocals, Alexander Beggins’ distinctive baritone ukulele, slow-burning orchestral flourishes, and themes of love. Funky grooves pepper some of the more upbeat tracks, while others lean on more gentle, tried-and-true sounds reminiscent of the Lumineers and Colbie Caillat. Still, it’s a mature, restrained, and sincere effort sure to please fans of both Wild Child and indie pop in general.
