White Irish Drinkers

Rated R 109 minutes 2011

In Brooklyn, circa 1975, one of the many young men trying to escape that place and time, Brian Leary (Nick Thurston), comes up against practically every coming-of-age cliché ever written: abusive alcoholic father (hammy Stephen Lang), hoodlum brother (Geoffrey Wigdor), drunken friends, nowhere job at the local movie house, etc. So why is writer-director John Gray’s drama such a nice, warm bath? Because of Brian’s budding relationship with a poetic local girl named Shauna (Leslie Murphy), and the way she suggests a naked run through the cemetery in broad daylight. On that slender thread hangs everything. At least Brian didn’t have to wrestle with horny priests. Karen Allen and Peter Riegert costar. (109 min.)
