Writer-director Noah Baumbach’s magic touch with complicated (read: neurotic) urban characters (Margot at the Wedding, The Squid and the Whale) fails him in this routine middle-age-crazy sitcom. Josh and Cornelia Srebnick (Ben Stiller and Noami Watts), married (read: bored) New York City documentary-makers, get carried away in their fascination with youthful hipsters Jamie and Darby (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried) and make fools of themselves. How many times have we seen Stiller sleepwalk through nearly identical plots? It’s an arguably workable premise, but Baumbach’s heart doesn’t seem to be in it. Maybe he misses his favorite leading lady, Greta Gerwig. Charles Grodin, Adam Horovitz, and Maria Dizzia costar (94 min.).
