Where to Eat on New Year’s Day

When: Mon., Jan. 1, 11 a.m. 2018

New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants, and there’s no shortage of special menus and food events to cap off 2017. New Year’s Day, however, is a decidedly different matter. If you wake up early enough, stumble over to Gio’s Pizza & Bocce (2420 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, GiosBerkeley.com) for a special brunch with free coffee and doughnuts until noon. Brunch is also going down at Luka’s Taproom & Lounge (2221 Broadway, Oakland, LukasOakland.com), fully equipped with fried chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, and hair of the dog cocktails until 4 p.m. Cosecha (907 Washington St., Oakland, CosechaCafe.com) will hold its sixth annual New Year’s Day brunch from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., serving churros, tamales, pozole, and menudo, which is widely believed to cure hangovers. After brunch, head over to Burmese restaurant Teni East Kitchen (4015 Broadway, Oakland, TeniEastKitchen.com), which will offer 50 percent off white sangria and tea leaf kale salads all day.
