Western Christian Bookstore Grand Reopening

When: Fri., March 20, 6-8 p.m. 2009

A perilous economy and declining literary market couldn't deter Vacaville impresario David Jackson from casting his luck on a Christian bookstore franchise. Jackson recently set his sights on the now-dormant Western Christian Bookstore chain, and decided to purchase nine stores in different Bay Area locations. First opened in 1914, Western Christian went bust several years ago -- Jackson bought his stores at an auction. As part of the resurrection effort, he plans to refurbish each store with a coffee shop and lounge areas, à la Barnes & Noble. He'll open the first redesigned Western Christian Bookstore on Friday, Mar. 20 in Oakland (1618 Franklin St.) with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Mayor Ron Dellums. The celebration continues all weekend, with children's activities on Saturday and a Sunday benefit concert at Oakland's Christ the Light Cathedral (2121 Harrison St., 6-8 p.m.), featuring local soul singer Ledisi.
