Wendy Lesser

When: Thu., Jan. 9, 7 p.m. 2014

It’s probably preaching to the converted — a professional reader reading a book about reading to a group of, presumably, readers — but we’ll allow it when the preacher is so good: There are few people in this world who are more uniquely qualified to — or more unfailingly skilled at — describing the particular pleasures of the written word than Wendy Lesser, founder and editor of The Threepenny Review and frequent contributor to lit-nerd household names such as The London Review of Books. Lesser’s new book, Why I Read — from which she’ll read at Books Inc., Alameda (1344 Park St., Alameda) — is exactly what it sounds like: part essay, part memoir, pure joy all the way through.
