Weekend Wake-up 4th Anniversary

When: Fri., Nov. 9, 7 p.m.-12 a.m. 2007

Any kid with a spray can and an active imagination can launch his or her own beautification project in Oakland, just like anyone with a mouth can start a movement. Such feel-good contentions are the linchpin of Weekend Wake-Up, an after-school talent showcase that, in the four years since its inception, morphed into one of the EastBay's premiere youth hip-hop events. Having spawned everything from breakdancing classes to block rejuvenation projects to an aerosol art exhibit that subverted Western conceptions of Islam, the show is now commemorating its fourth anniversary with live performances by some of the hottest emcees and DJs in local underground hip-hop. Dubbed "Real Unity," the show goes down Friday, Nov. 9 from 7 p.m. until midnight, with a line-up that includes the Attik, One Struggle Band, Company of Prophets, Fiyawata, DJs Aeble Dee, SmokeStaxx, and Treat-U-Nice, and live painting by KufuOne. This free event takes place at Cafe Axe Cultural Center (1525 Webster St. in Oakland).
