We Need to Talk About Kevin

Rated R 111 minutes 2011

Tilda Swinton at her most irritating, which is to say at her most effective. Harassed wife and mother Eva Khatchadourian (Swinton) seems to sleepwalk her way through her nightmarish life as the mother of the unbelievably wanton eponymous bad boy, played at various stages of his life by Jasper Newell and Ezra Miller. Her husband (John C. Reilly), her workmates, her friends — no help whatsoever. The question becomes: Who’s going to snap first? Swinton adherents, and there are those, will positively swoon at the sight of Eva’s agony. The rest of us will harbor doubts about director/co-writer Lynne Ramsay, co-writer Rory Kinnear, and Lionel Shriver, whose novel got adapted. But there’s absolutely no doubt about Ms. Swinton and her filmography – she’s a masochist for the ages. (112 min.)
