Wayne Wallace & Friends

When: Mon., July 7, 8 & 10 p.m. 2008

San Francisco-raised Latin bandleader Wayne Wallace has proven, time and time again, that the trombone can be just as glamorous as the saxophone. Around here he's known as the ultimate man behind the curtain, having penned and arranged songs for such R&B royalty as Con Funk Shun and Sister Sledge, producing Alexa Weber Morales' well-crafted 2007 album, Vagabundeo/Wanderings, and composing La Peña's 33rd anniversary suite. His forthcoming album Nature of the Beat features infectious renditions of Earth Wind and Fire's "Serpentine Fire" (sung in English, Spanish, and Lucumi), and Ray Charles' "Unchain My Heart," which highlights the vocal powers of saxophonist Ron Stallings. Even the unmastered CDR sounds phenomenal; imagine the ensemble when it descends on Yoshi's (1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco) on Monday, July 7. 8 p.m. ($14) & 10 p.m. ($10). SF.Yoshis.com
