Waste Land

Rated NR 98 minutes 2010

It’s not often you see a feel-good movie about modern art. With Brazilian conceptual artist Vik Muniz as our guide we visit Jardim Gramacho, a massive dump outside of Rio de Janeiro, and meet a lively group of catadores, aka garbage pickers, as they discuss their philosophies and pose for their portraits – Muniz creates large-scale likenesses of them using waste materials, then sells the photos in London, with proceeds going to the catadores’ union. Their number one message: People are more important than things. Number two thought for the day: Everything should be recycled. Directed by Lucy Walker, Karen Harley, and João Jardim. (90 min.)
