Washed Out

When: Fri., May 4, 8 p.m. 2012

If you don't know what "chill-wave" is, it's basically shoegaze for the bedroom beat-maker generation: danceable, shimmering headphone candy that's dunked in a healthy bucket of self-contemplation. Toro Y Moi, Neon Indian, and Washed Out are among its purveyors, but the latter act (aka Atlanta-based musician Ernest Greene) is less overtly dancey and more contemplative than his peers -- think reverb-drenched, bass-heavy synth pop with wistful, harmonized vocals. That makes it not only more accessible but also completely irresistible. So thought the producers of Portlandia, who tapped the incredibly blissed-out "Feel It All Around," from 2010 EP Life of Leisure, for their theme song, and the folks at Sub Pop Records, who released his first full-length, Within and Without, last year. Washed Out is playing Outside Lands in August; in the meantime, you can try and catch him in a more intimate environment at Mezzanine (444 Jessie St., San Francisco) on Friday, May 4. Stare at your shoes and dance. 8 p.m., sold out but check Craigslist. MezzanineSF.com
