Rated PG-13 139 minutes 2011

The setup is corny as only a sports-tournament movie can be, but that's outweighed by the performances of Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton as estranged brothers who overcome their sad childhoods to rise to the top of the mixed-martial-arts world. Hardy and Edgerton bring an unforced masculine sensitivity to filmmaker Gavin O'Connor's clichéd scenario, which includes not only hammy Nick Nolte as the brothers' drunk, abusive father but enough plug-ugly MMA fighters to populate a half dozen Jean-Claude Van Damme flicks. When it isn't slow and somber, it's frantic and unfocused in the fight sequences — too many close-ups and audience-reaction cutaways. Director O'Connor wrote the screenplay with Anthony Tambakis and Cliff Dorman. (139 min)
