When: Sat., Aug. 9, 2 p.m. 2008

Growing up in Oakland during the Great Depression, Warren Barrios Wilson was constantly saddened by the poverty and injustice all around him. Inspired by members of his family, upon reaching middle age he assembled his limited resources to found Educal, a nonprofit aimed at helping ex-convicts get their lives back on track. At the African American Museum and Library (659 14th St., Oakland) on Saturday, August 9, Wilson discusses his memoir Dark, Light, Almost White: Memoirs of a Creole Son. 2 p.m. OaklandLibrary.org
