Waltz With Bashir

Rated R 90 min. 2008

Filmmaker Ari Folman’s animated account of the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon uses first-person testimony from Israeli soldiers behind some of the most startling and beautiful “cartoon” images you’ll ever see — the better to underline the horrors of that war, or any war. The opening scene of a pack of vicious dogs racing through a city is appropriately nightmarish, as is a fantasy-styled scene of soldiers wading ashore naked, armed with assault rifles, in an eerie yellow light. The title alludes to Gemayel Bashir, the pro-Israeli leader of the Lebanese Phalange, whose bombing death touched off the infamous Sabra-Shatila massacre of Palestinian refugees. A landmark film that will haunt you long after viewing (90 min.).
