Filmmaker Ari Folmans animated account of the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon uses first-person testimony from Israeli soldiers behind some of the most startling and beautiful cartoon images youll ever see the better to underline the horrors of that war, or any war. The opening scene of a pack of vicious dogs racing through a city is appropriately nightmarish, as is a fantasy-styled scene of soldiers wading ashore naked, armed with assault rifles, in an eerie yellow light. The title alludes to Gemayel Bashir, the pro-Israeli leader of the Lebanese Phalange, whose bombing death touched off the infamous Sabra-Shatila massacre of Palestinian refugees. A landmark film that will haunt you long after viewing (90 min.).
