DJ & Dance, Rock & Pop

When: Fri., Aug. 8, 9 p.m. 2008

T-Pain may be the once-undisputed champion of Autotune Software. Usher may be a master of noncommittal love ballads. R. Kelly may be a well-established coiner of crude metaphors. But none of them have the self-irony of EastBay singer Wallpaper (aka Ricky Reed), who combines glitchy new wave beats with absurdist lyrics (i.e., I go big on the weeeeekend/Like a T-Rex! and I love a girl/She is a black girl/Or she is white). Wallpaper performs Friday, Aug. 8 alongside electro-rap group Hottub, Vitamin Party, Aaron Axelsen, and DJ Amplive, who is quickly becoming the EastBay's answer to mega-producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz. They'll put they're own spin on modern technology and nostalgia-based trends at the Owl Magazine's third anniversary party at the Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $12.
