Viva Riva!

Rated R 96 minutes 2011

This nouveau-blaxploitation actioner from the Democratic Republic of the Congo is packed to overflowing with colorful characters doing outrageous things. Riva, a Congolese racketeer now working in Angola (played by first-timer Patsha Bay Mukuna), comes back to his hometown of Kinshasa with a shipment of stolen gasoline just in time for a fuel shortage, and makes a killing in more ways than one. Filmmaker Djo Tunda Wa Munga — who wrote, produced, and directed — was determined to show the realities of life in his home country as realistically as possible, but he also spices the movie with slapstick violence and comic mischief, mostly built around the vengeful Angolan crime boss on Riva’s tail (New York actor Hoji Fortuna) and a policewoman (Marlene Longage) who goes undercover as a nun. It’s as if the spirit of Coffy and Black Caesar were reborn in West Africa forty years later, Gonzo in the Congo. Also with French actress Manie Malone as treacherous sexpot Nora. (96 min.)
