An exquisite character study for the literary-minded. Emmanuelle Devos excels as archetypal underdog novelist Violette Leduc, whose career was marked by her unrequited love for fellow writer Simone de Beauvoir (Sandrine Kiberlain) but also by Leduc’s fierce anti-authoritarianism. Gifted writer-director Martin Provost (Séraphine) manages to work in some fascinating subplots: WWII, the postwar French intellectual ferment, and the “taboo” concept of female sexuality in the arts, circa mid-20th-century. Letter perfect supporting performances by Jacques Bonnafé, Olivier Gourmet, and Olivier Py. The blistering screenplay is by Marc Abdelnour, René de Ceccatty, and Provost (138 min.).
