Victoria Vox is a leading figure in the resurgence of the ukulele. Now, I know what you’re thinking: the ukulele? Does she play cute, simple, strummy songs? No. In fact, her music covers a wide range of influences, including jazz, indie pop, world-beat, and rock ’n’ roll. She’s been composing songs since she was 10, and studied music at Berklee College of Music. Since 2003, she’s chosen to have the ukulele be her primary instrument. (She writes just about all of her music on it.) And she’s developed into a really eclectic musician. On her latest album, Colorful Heart, she jumps all over the place in terms of style alongside a full band. It’s a fun album that also happens to take you by surprise every once in a while with intensely emotional moments.
