Victoria & Abdul

Rated PG-13 110 minutes 2017

The second Judi Dench starrer about the widowed Queen Victoria and an unlikely close male companion – alongside 1997’s Mrs. Brown – leavens its matronly cuteness with a pronounced flavor of real-world socio-political commentary, courtesy director Stephen Frears, screenwriter Lee Hall, and book author Shrabani Basu. The queen’s courtiers loathe and despise her imported Indian servant Abdul Karim (Bollywood star Ali Fazal) for reasons of race and class, but the old lady is greatly stimulated by his company and yearns to learn more about her empire. Problems ensue. High-gloss acting all around, including by supporting players Adeel Akhtar, Eddie Izzard, Tim Pigott-Smith, Paul Higgins, and Olivia Williams. Yet another character gem from filmmaker Frears (High Fidelity, The Grifters, The Queen) (112 min., 2017, rated PG-13)
