When: Sat., Dec. 12, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. 2009
Feeling a little leery of hitting the malls? How about exploring the caves instead? On Saturday, Dec. 12, a guided tour of Vasco Caves will allow visitors to see everything from rare amphibians to nesting habitats of eagles and other migratory birds. The East Bay Regional Park District keeps the caves on the down low, so you need to get to the Round Valley Regional Preserve (19450 Marsh Creek Rd., Brentwood) to catch the bus that will take you to the rocks. Once there, a naturalist will alert you to some of the native rock paintings, the flora and fauna, and other sites that may be put you in the holiday spirit — assuming that holiday is the Winter Solstice. Call for a reservation: 888-EBPARKS, option 2, then 3. Must be ten years or up. 9 a.m.-2 p.m., $30.
