Václav Havel's Vanek

When: Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 2 & 7 p.m. Continues through May 18 2008

Eastenders Repertory Company may have recently moved from Oakland to San Francisco, but it's back in the EastBay to present 3 Vanĕk Plays by Václav Havel, the last president of Czechoslovakia and first president of the CzechRepublic. Havel's short absurdist comedies Audience, Unveiling, and Protest feature fictional dissident playwright Ferdinand Vanĕk, not to be confused with actual dissident playwright Havel -- on second thought, go ahead and confuse them if you want. Written to entertain fellow banned writers in the 1970s (some of whom went on to write their own Vanĕk plays), the comedies show the protagonist confronting various establishment types and the artists who kowtow to them. Artistic director Susan E. Evans and Gina Baleria direct a five-member cast featuring Craig Souza as Vanĕk. May 1 through May 18 at Jewish Community Center of the EastBay(1414 Walnut St., Berkeley) or 800-838-3006.
