Van Hunt

When: Thu., Aug. 20, 8 p.m. 2009

Soul singer Van Hunt got a lot of mileage out of the revivalist trend that took hold a few years ago, around the time Hunt released his self-titled debut. One more album and one Grammy Award later, the Ohio-born artist is still going strong. Part of his success owes to an interesting foundation: The singer grew up playing saxophone, drums, keyboards, and guitar, flitted in and out of rock bands, and later made beats for Atlanta rappers. The rest derives from his talent as a songwriter. Hunt's first two albums teem with immediately catchy pop tunes and searching, pitiable love ballads, all sung in a clean, modular falsetto. Van Hunt performs at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, at OaklandYoshi's (510 Embarcadero). R&B singer and multi-instrumentalist Greg Scott follows at 10 p.m. with a seven-piece band that includes keyboardist Maya Kronfeld, local R&B chanteuse Sakai on background vocals, and electronic percussion by Chris Detrick. $18, $14.
