Valerie Troutt & the Fear of the Fat Planet Crew

When: Wed., July 29, 10 p.m. 2009

Perpetual reformation and imaginative programming have helped Yoshi's expand its core audience. Now, it's not only a venue where jazz heads queue up to see A-list acts; it's also one of the best places to catch local R&B stars, high-profile DJs, Latin dance bands, and, on super-special occasions, Jamaican dancehall. This week, San FranciscoYoshi's (1330 Fillmore St.) will host a series of late shows with several prodigiously talented Bay Area artists. Valerie Troutt headlines Wednesday night (Jul. 29) with an unusually large iteration of her band, the Fear of a Fat Planet Crew. She'll feature a horn section with trumpeter Rafa Postal and saxophonist Howard Wiley, plus Jovan Watkins on background vocals, sultry poet Joyce Lee, and Jaz Sawyer on drums. Thursday's show features the avant trio Broun Fellinis (Jul. 30) with their mix of free improvisation and grainy, processed sound. On Friday (Jul. 31), stay tuned for Jazz Mafia emeritus Joe Bagale, who recently solidified his career as a singer and bandleader. He'll perform with peppery Oakland chanteuse Karyn Paige and a full band. 10 p.m., $10-$14.
