A nine-year-old Mexican boy named Carlitos (played convincingly by Adrián Alonso) makes the perilous illegal journey across the border to the US to rejoin his house-maid mother (Kate del Castillo) in Los Angeles, and has the same type of misadventures a runaway puppy might in an old Walt Disney animal story. That is, director Patricia Riggen and writer Ligiah Villalobos put Carlitos in many dangerous spots but he always escapes - and in so doing tells us more about this strange new land than we bargained for. Heartwarming but never mushy. Costarring Eugenio Derbez and Carmen Salinas (109 min.).
