Who knew that Angelina Jolie would go toe-to-toe with David Lean? Director Jolie turns in a solid, if unimaginative, chronicle of real-life World War II US Army flyer Louis Zamperini (played by English actor Jack O’Connell), who was shot down in the Pacific, survived weeks adrift in a rubber life raft, then was captured by the Japanese and tortured by a sadistic non-com named Watanabe (pop music star Miyavi). The sappy string music detracts from the action, but director Jolie handles the through-story like a pro and we get to know a remarkable man. Screenplay by Joel and Ethan Coen, Richard LaGravenese, and William Nicholson, from the book by Laura Hillenbrand (137 min.).
