.UC Regents Tweak Eligibility Rules

There was a lot on the plate at yesterday’s UC Regents meeting. The entree consisted of a sweeping change in what students must do in order to be considered for admission to the university system. Under the old plan, which was enshrined by Clark Kerr in the early 1960s, the top 12.5 percent of graduating students were guaranteed a slot in the UC system. Now, sez the Chron, that figure has shrunk to 9 percent. Meanwhile, the top 9 percent in the graduating class of each individual school will also be guaranteed entry into a UC school. Confused? Think affirmative action. Giving students of color an advantage in the admissions process is now illegal, so the Regents are guaranteeing slots for each high school in order to preserve academic diversity and still fall within the bounds of the law.
