Matier and Ross lead with an item about rising UC Berkeley animal rights protests this morning. Protesters have allegedly held midnight demos outside the homes of researchers, blaring “animal killers” through a bullhorn. Others have keyed scientists’ cars and thrown rocks through their windows, or walked up to their front doors to yell at them, scaring their families. Some of the researchers, the Chron adds, are doing nothing more brutal than keeping birds in cages in order to study song patterns. This escalating pattern, as well as the recent targeting of construction companies building the new Cal life science research center, is reminiscent of the campaign to shut down the English Huntingdon research facility, in which demonstrators targeted the company’s financiers, creditors, and business partners. Eventually, several protesters were convicted and jailed during this campaign. Is Huntingdon school of protest coming to UC Berkeley?
