TV on the Radio

When: May 9-10, 9 p.m. 2011

Rocked by the recent death of its former bassist, Gerard Smith, Brooklyn four-tet TV on the Radio will nonetheless descend on the Bay Area this week for two shows. Roughly a decade old, the band is known for jangly, hair-trigger guitar lines and drums that pitch forward at a seizure-like pace. Singer Tunde Adebimpe alternates between nervous, bumpy energy and languid blues. Guitarist Kyp Malone bobbles up and down with each power-chord crunch. Drummer Jaleel Bunton shifts grooves with machine-gun precision. TV on the Radio's new album, Nine Types of Light, dropped just a few weeks ago, and it's already found favor with critics. The band members will celebrate Monday and Tuesday, May 9-10, at The Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $30. APEConcerts.com.
