Tuya is a no-nonsense contemporary rural Mongolian woman who raises sheep while her disabled husband cares for their children, but she needs more help on the farm -- so she divorces her husband and begins interviewing suitors. Talk about female empowerment. Filmmaker Wang Quanans ingratiatingly matter-of-fact drama looks very much like a Western -- beautifully photographed wide open spaces -- but its portrait of life on the steppes is up-to-date and naturalistic. And actor Yu Nans earthy performance as Tuya compares favorably with Gong Lis role as the headstrong peasant protagonist of The Story of Qiu Ju. Stand back and let her work. Co-written and directed by Wang (The Story of Ermei) (86 min.).
