Los Angeles recording artist Mayer Hawthorne, and Seattle producer Jake One make up the supergroup Tuxedo, which has been making waves with the renewed interest in the music once-called “Gangsta Boogie,” and later, “G-Funk” and “P-Funk,” which is a mix of the bombastic basslines from the early hip-hop of California, the heavy synths of funk, and the glossy production values of disco. On July 19th, they released Tuxedo III, an eleven-track album featuring Dâm-Funk, Battlecat, Levin Kali, and MF DOOM. Having worked with the likes of Drake, Future, The Weekend and De La Soul as producers, Tuxedo’s sound is both polished and rough, and old and new at the same time. Gangsta Boogie is back, and it’s here to stay.
