Rated PG-13 103 minutes 2010

There are still giant, marauding trolls in contemporary Norway, and it’s up to a squad of university students, plus the wily old title character, to, uh, sniff them out. But what are they going to do with them once they catch them? Writer-director André Øvredal’s unique (for now), ultimately puzzling “horror” adventure has the advantage of going places that Hollywood has neglected, back into ancient Northern European yarns involving fjords, troll stench rub, and monsters with names like Ringlefinch, Dovre, Tosserlad, and Jotnar. But again, what are they going to do with them once they catch them? The special effects, disconcertingly primitive at first, take on their own charm as night falls. With Glenn Erland Tosterud, Tomas Alf Larsen, and Otto Jespersen as the Trollhunter (90 min.)
