Towers of the Southwest

When: Mon., April 8, 7-8:30 p.m. 2013

The Southwest is one of America's dreamiest regions. Nowhere are sunsets pinker, with shades of mauve, blue-grey, and orange complementing the dusty cliffs of the desert landscape. But for many rock climbers, it may be the dreamiest. Join Colorado climber Steve "Crusher" Bartlett on Monday, Apr. 8, at REI (1338 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley) for an evening of stories about the many "stone towers" of the southwest, including the first-ever ascents of New Mexico's Shiprock, northern Arizona's Totem Pole, and Utah's Castleton Tower. Bartlett will share images and tales from many of his own 150 pinnacle-climbs over the last 25 years, and sign copies of his award-winning book on peak experiences, Desert Towers: Fat Cat Summits and Kitty Litter Rock. 7-8:30 p.m., free. 510-527-4140 or
