Towelhead

Rated R 116 minutes 2008

This isn’t a movie, it’s a loaded gun. Filmmaker Alan Ball’s suburban melodrama is so packed with plot booby traps — teen sexuality, anti-Arab prejudice, abusive parents, adultery, general intolerance — that we almost lose sight of the central character, a massively conflicted thirteen-year-old half-Lebanese girl named Jasira (played memorably by newcomer Summer Bishil). Somehow Jasira overcomes every pitfall dug by TV shockmeister Ball (True Blood, Six Feet Under) and finds her own way, no thanks to her frother dad (Peter Macdissi), a lecherous neighbor (Aaron Eckhart), the do-gooder next door (Toni Collette), et al. Not exactly exploitation, but we wouldn’t want to live on the difference. Ball adapted it from the novel by Alica Eran (116 min.).
