Torche and Big Business

When: Sat., Aug. 6, 9 p.m. 2011

We've sung Torche's praises plenty in the past, but really, if you haven't seen this Southern trio before, do yourself a favor. Careening somewhere between highly caffeinated alt-rock, detuned sludge, and pop, the threesome (whose members live in Atlanta, Gainesville, and Miami) has effectively created its own kind of genre — doom pop. Lead singer/guitarist Steve Brooks is also one of the few openly gay musicians in the heavy music scene, which was the subject of a 2008 article in the Seattle weekly The Stranger. The band recently added Tilts guitarist Andrew Elstner to its lineup following the 2008 departure of Juan Montoya. See how the new configuration gels when Torche plays with its Hydra Head labelmate Big Business, plus Thrones, at Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Saturday, Aug. 6. 9 p.m., $15. Slims-SF.com.
