Oakland brothers D’Wayne and Charles Ray Wiggins (later known as Raphael Saadiq) and their cousin Timothy Christian Riley grew up playing music together. When Shelia E. hired them as part of her backing band, they got a taste of professional show business and started their own group, Tony! Toni! Toné! Their mixture of soul, blues, and rap, delivered with inventive choreography and a touch of gospel, struck an immediate chord. After building a fan base the old-fashioned way (by touring relentlessly), they exploded in 1990 with their second album, The Revival, a platinum record with four hits that went to number one on the R&B charts. When Saadiq dropped out to go solo and produce other artists, they continued touring with Amar Khalil, an original member, as lead singer. Alicia Keys got them back in the studio in 2003 to back her up on the hit “Diary.” They continue to wow fans with their hits and a high-voltage stage show.
